Health& Safety Concerns with FDM Printing. With regards to FDM printing, the primary health concern is that some of the filaments, when heated and used in printing 3D models, produce fumes that contain toxic substances.(ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) in particular, but PLA (PolyLactic Acid), to a lesser extent, as well)APLA-made-cranial model for surgical consulting purposes costs around USD 5.20 [ 230 ]. The cost of a 3D printer and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) oscillates around USD 1350 and USD 25/kg, with one kg of ABS being able to generate around 7–10 3D models [ 174 ].
Thisstudy monitored particulates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from 3-D printers using acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) filaments at a workplace to assess exposure before and after introducing exposure mitigation measures. Air samples were collected in the printing room and adjacent corridor, and real-time measurements
3Dprinting or additive manufacturing is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, with the material being added together (such as plastics, liquids or powder grains being fused), typically layer by
PLA is a variation of PLA that has added material in order to make the filament less brittle, have a smoother surface finish, and less likely to absorb moisture. Typically, TPU is added into the filament in order to achieve this property. PLA+ will have the feel and functionality of ABS without the smell.
Themost common types of 3D printing materials are thermoplastics, which are heated and extruded through a nozzle to form layers. The most popular thermoplastics are PLA (polylactic acid) and ABS
WhenPLA+ is compared to PLA, there is no doubt amongst most 3D printing enthusiasts about the difference in quality. PLA+ filament is much smoother. The layering is more precise and the finish is much finer. With experience, it is possible to get a lot of detail from PLA+ if you learn how to fine tune your printer settings. PLA (injection grade) is often used for disposable plastic forks and cold beverage cups, but rarely reusable containers. There is some anecdotal evidence that lots of 3D printing filaments, particularly cheap Asian filaments, contain toxic chemicals in the pigments and additives.
